About the Bluesky avatar size

Bluesky does not publish a single fixed pixel spec for the avatar; instead the app resizes whatever square you upload, capped at roughly 1 MB. A 1000 by 1000 square is a safe, widely used target that stays sharp both when the avatar shows tiny in a reply thread and when someone taps it to view full size, while 400 by 400 is a practical floor below which it starts to look soft. Bluesky masks the upload to a circle across the whole app, so keep a face or logo centred and away from the corners.

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio is the Bluesky avatar?
The Bluesky avatar uses a 1:1 aspect ratio at 1000 by 1000 pixels.

1:1 is a shape, not just this size. See every image size that uses the 1:1 aspect ratio, where it comes from, and how to crop into it.

How this spec was checked

Platform sizes change without notice, so this entry records what it was verified against rather than stating a number and hoping it holds. Last checked July 2, 2026.

ConventionBluesky does not publish a size for this surface. The number below is the one the industry has standardised on, which is a useful answer but not a claim about Bluesky.

Bluesky enforces a file-size cap (roughly 1 MB) rather than a pixel size, which the intro below already says. 1000 by 1000 is a practical target, not a published requirement.

Every spec on this site carries one of those two labels. See the cheat sheet for the full split, and the changelog for every correction with the date it happened.
