2:3 aspect ratio
2:3 is the tall portrait (pinterest) shape: 2 units wide for every 3 tall, which is 0.6667 as a decimal. 1000 x 1500 px is 2:3 because 1000 divided by 1500 gives 0.6667, and the fraction reduces to 2:3. 1 of the image sizes on this site use it.
Where 2:3 comes from
2:3 is Pinterest's recommended Pin shape. Pinterest lays out a vertical, masonry feed, and a taller Pin occupies more of it. 2:3 is where Pinterest draws the line before it starts truncating.
Which platforms use 2:3

2:3 in pixels
Every row below is calculated from the ratio rather than looked up, so the heights are exact where the arithmetic is exact and rounded to the nearest whole pixel where it is not. A fractional pixel is not something a file can store.
| Width | Height | Used by |
|---|---|---|
| 1000 px | 1500 px | Pinterest standard pin |
| 1080 px | 1620 px | - |
| 1200 px | 1800 px | - |
| 1920 px | 2880 px | - |
Cropping and letterboxing into 2:3
Go much taller than 2:3 on Pinterest and the Pin is cut off in the feed rather than shown small. This is one of the few places where exceeding the recommended height actively costs you.
There are only two honest ways to put an image of one shape into a frame of another. Crop to fill keeps the frame full and throws away whatever does not fit, which is almost always what you want for a feed. Fit inside keeps the whole image and pads the remaining space, which is what you want when the image is a diagram, a screenshot or anything where losing an edge loses meaning. Scaling to fit without doing either, so the image is stretched, is the one option that is always wrong.
