About the Instagram profile picture size
Upload your Instagram profile picture as a 640 by 640 square. Instagram stores it at about 320 by 320, but the larger export gives its resampler a clean source and keeps the avatar crisp on high-density screens; 1000 by 1000 works equally well and there is no benefit beyond that. It is always shown inside a circle, so anything in the corners is cut off. A logo or face works best centred with a little breathing room, because it shrinks to a tiny 32px circle next to your posts in the feed.

Why upload 640 by 640 when Instagram only stores 320 by 320?
Because phone screens draw more than one physical pixel for each CSS pixel. On a 2x or 3x display a 110 pixel avatar is rendered with 220 or 330 device pixels, so an image stored at 320 across still has just enough detail. Feeding Instagram a larger square gives its own resampler a cleaner starting point than a file that already sits at the limit.
What does not help is going much bigger than 1000 by 1000. Instagram throws the extra resolution away immediately, and a heavier file only means a slower upload.
What gets cut off by the circle crop?
A circle inscribed in a square covers about 78.5 percent of the square's area, so roughly a fifth of your image never appears, and all of it comes from the four corners. A logo positioned in the top-left of a square file is simply gone.
Design the picture as if the safe area were a circle sitting a little inside the square: centre the face or the mark, and leave visible breathing room around it so the mask does not clip the edges of the subject.
Then check it at 32 pixels, the size shown next to your posts in the feed. Anything with more than one word, thin strokes or a detailed illustration turns into a smudge at that scale.
